L/100 km vs mpg
Europe, Turkey, and most of the world use liters per 100 kilometers, where lower is better. The United States uses miles per US gallon, and the UK still quotes miles per imperial gallon, where higher is better. When comparing cars from different markets, always convert to the same unit first.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert L/100 km to mpg?
Divide 235.21 by the L/100 km value for US mpg, or 282.48 for UK (imperial) mpg. For example, 6 L/100 km is 235.21 ÷ 6 = 39.2 mpg (US) or 282.48 ÷ 6 = 47.1 mpg (UK).
How do I convert mpg to L/100 km?
Use the same constants: L/100 km = 235.21 ÷ mpg (US) or 282.48 ÷ mpg (UK). 30 mpg (US) is 7.84 L/100 km.
Why are US and UK mpg different?
A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 liters, while a US gallon is 3.785 liters. Because the UK gallon is about 20% larger, the same car shows a higher mpg figure in the UK.
Why can't I just multiply by a fixed factor?
L/100 km measures fuel per distance while mpg measures distance per fuel, so they are inversely related. Doubling L/100 km halves the mpg, which is why the conversion uses division.
